    Size: Medium (5-10cm)

I got tired of fishing a tangled extension cord out from under the printer every time I needed power across the bench. Empty filament spools were already stacking up in a corner — so I turned two of them into a cord reel that actually makes sense next to a 3D printer.

This is a printed frame that snaps onto a pair of empty filament spools. The cord wraps around both barrels like a stadium track, the plug passes through a dedicated slot so you are not fighting the end every time you pull, and there is a little cubby plus a real handle so you can hang it or carry it without the whole thing unspooling into a knot.

Here is why this stuck with me: it uses something every filament-printing maker already has (dead spools), and it solves a problem that shows up the moment your printer farm — or just one messy desk — grows past a single wall outlet. The Medium size on the site fits common spool hubs; there are 79 / 82 / 93 mm variants in the files if your brand runs a different inner diameter.

Print notes that matter: you will need to cut a small notch in each spool flange so the frame seats cleanly — five minutes with a craft blade or flush cutters. Print the frame in PETG or a tough PLA; layer lines on the handle are fine, this is a shop tool not a display piece. Once it clicks on, load the cord, seat the plug through the pass-through, and park it under the desk or on a wall hook.

If you have ever kicked a power brick across the floor mid-print, you already know why this exists.

    • Pick your size. Measure the inner hub of your empty spools (common sizes: 79, 82, or 93 mm) and print the matching frame.

    • Print the frame flat on the bed in PETG (or tough PLA), ~0.2 mm layers, 15–20% infill. No exotic supports needed for the Medium part.

    • Notch the spools. Cut a small clearance notch in each spool flange where the frame cradles sit so the print seats flush.

    • Snap it together. Press the printed frame onto both spools until the cradles lock. Fit the handle orientation the way you like to hang or carry it.

    • Load the cord. Feed the plug through the pass-through slot, wind the cord around both barrels, and tuck the end in the cubby so it stays put.

    • Park it. Hang it under the bench, on a hook, or stand it next to the printer — ready the next time you need power across the room.
